  1. My wife and I have been using this method for over 20 years. The only change we made was that contributing to our retirement came first, before the mortgage. If you can’t afford the house you want after saving for retirement, learn to want a cheaper house. The monthly surplus just became extra savings, or used to increase the emergency fund.
